6. Royalty Free or Rights Managed

What is stock photography?
Stock photography is a set of ’ready’ images and by buying from us you purchase the rights to use the images rather than commissioning a photographer to do a shoot. The main benefits of digital stock photography are that you see the final image(s) before you buy the rights to use them and these images can be licensed immediately. The cost of stock photography, especially royalty free images, is much lower compared to commissioned photography. Stock photography saves you the cost of a model, a photographer, the location, props, art direction and editing.

What is Royalty Free?
Royalty free digital stock photography means that the client who buys the images does not have to pay any royalties, no matter how may times they use the image(s). The buyer does not own the copyright of the images but has bought the right to use the images legally without further payments or interruptions from the seller. These images cannot be re-sold or transferred but it offers a wide range of benefits; mainly lower pricing and convenience.

What are the differences between Royalty Free and Rights Managed?
Rights managed means that individual images can be ’rented’ out by negotiating a specific price for specific use. It also gives clients exclusive rights and the ability to restrict (similar) use of the image by others. Royalty free photography offers a buyer the ability to use an image in an unlimited number of ways for a single license fee. This greatly reduces the costs and allows far greater freedom with the images purchased. Of course, supplying all our images in digital format gives our customers the advantage of being able to go straight to the color separator or printer rather than having to scan them in at an additional cost. Most importantly, this allows much more flexibility than a traditional photo library.
